- Sanmarga Ikya Sangam
Amongst the South Indians who took keen interest in the education of South Indian children, I am naming a few others also took part were ----- Sadhu Kuppuswamy, N. M. Naidu, Jambulingam Pillai, Gopal Mudaliar, Alparty Tatalya, V. M. Pillai, K. S. Raman, Kadarvelu Mudaliar and others.
The Telugu, Tamil and Malayalam people got to-gether at place called Taupo near Vaileka in RAKI RAKI at the residence of Mr. K. S. Raman under the chairmanship of Goru Appalswamy gave birth to "Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam" with its motto "Love Light and Faith".
The Society started planning to build schools in all the districts of Fiji. The first primary school of the society was Nadi Sangam School built and opened on 9th February, 1930. From its inception till mid 1950 in all Sangam Schools throughout Fiji English, Hindi, Telugu and Tamil were being taught.
Swami Avinasananda of Rama Krishna Mission assisted "Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam" in getting registered under the Companies Ordinance 1913 on 21st May, 1937. After him Swami Rudrananda assisted the Society in building more schools and in acquiring land.
Then India Sanmarga Ikya Sangam has now 5 High Schools and 16 Primary Schools. Only in 3 Primary Schools Telugu language is being taught.
In 1940 some Telugu people headed by Alparty Tatalya decided to form a separate society for Telugu people.
At last on 20th April, 1941 under the chairmanship of David Robert "THE DAKSHINA INDIA ANDHRA SANGAM OF FIJI" was given birth to promote Telugu Language.
The Dakshina India Andhra Sangam of Fiji has new 4 Primary Schools and one High School. In one Primary School Telugu language is being taught.
PRESENT POSITION
As it is now all mix marriges are going on amongst Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam and North Indians, the younger generation all talking in Hindustani as well as learning Hindustani. Some older people still feel to preserve their mother tongue Telugu. So far no Telugu film ever came to Fiji.
